Using Props to Enhance Senior Portraits

Whether you use props in your senior portraits is entirely up to you, but done right, they add a plethora of personality and uniqueness. Senior portraits capture a brief, monumental time in a teenager’s life, and there’s no better way to remember everything dear to them in high school than with sentimental items.

10 Meaningful Props to Use in Your Senior Pictures

  1. Have fun with balloons to show off your playful side and add a vibrant touch of color! Who doesn’t love balloons?

  2. Bring along your sports jersey—you can either wear it or drape it in the background. Sports equipment such as helmets, a bat, et cetera are also perfect.

  3. Did you play in the marching band, or work hard on the competitive dance team? Bring along your instrument or favorite pair of jazz shoes. If you sing, DJ, or are simply passionate about the music scene, headphones would be a great prop!

  4. Books make for a beautiful prop for anyone, but especially those taking pride in their academic success. Bring a stack of books to sit on, or a meaningful title to hold.

  5. Are you leaving home for college after graduation? Do you hope to travel the world? Suitcases are amazing props we can do so much with!

  6. A sign with the year of graduation on it may sound cliche, but it’s classic in the best of ways for a reason. Write what you’re excited about in the future on it for a twist.

  7. Flowers are always in. If flowers are not naturally in the destination of your senior portrait shoot, you can still incorporate them by either wearing a flower crown, or having a bouquet of dainty flowers to get creative with.

  8. Lean against your car if it’s your most prized possession. High school holds many rites of passage, and driving is at the top of many’s list! Show off and commemorate your ride by incorporating it into your senior pictures.

  9. Wear your cap and gown, or make a mock diploma wrapped nicely in ribbon to capture the fact that you are graduating. Underneath the gown, you could even wear attire that shows what your next school or destination will be. (Go Rams?!)

  10. Grab the confetti and pop open the sparkling cider. These are FUN to use as props! There is simply something so magical about confetti—or even bubbles—flying around in a photograph, and the same goes for the bubblies you drink! What could be a better way to celebrate a milestone?
